Biodiversity Net Gain

An approach to development that makes sure that habitats for wildlife are left in a measurably better state than they were before the development

Biodiversity net gain (BNG) is an approach to development that ensures habitats for wildlife are left in a measurably better state than they were before development. In England, BNG became mandatory for all sites in April 2024 as part of the Environment Act 2021. Under these new laws, developers in England are required to deliver at least 10% Biodiversity Net Gain by creating or enhancing habitats. This must be evidenced using the statutory metric calculation tool and maintained for 30 years.

Wherever possible, BNG should be delivered within the development site. However, this isn’t always feasible, and in these cases developers can purchase off-site units from local landowners instead. In return, the landowner commits to delivering habitat creation and enhancement works on their land, and managing this for 30 years.

SWTC provides consultancy services to support both developers and landowners. If you’re a landowner interested in exploring BNG opportunities, our experienced land advisors can help you start the process. We have the expertise to carry out habitat, hedgerow and river surveys; provide reports; and complete the Statutory Metric Calculation Tool. At every stage of the process, we will collaborate with you to ensure that achievable habitat targets are selected to optimise wins for nature and ensure a reliable income for you.

Once a BNG design has been agreed with you, we can create a Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan to ensure you meet your targets for the next 30 years. If you need help to establish or manage habitats, our specialist land management team can help you successfully deliver your BNG project.
